Doug Mazell knows how to tell a story with light. Mazell is the owner of Great Art Productions, which creates, produces and delivers beautiful commercials for any business in Southern California. Mazell started working in light 20 years ago on the streets of Los Angeles working as a staff photographer on a daily newspaper. Today Mazell is responsible for all the lighting and camera work on Hollywood feature films.
The two extremes both use light to tell their stories. As a news Photographer the trick was find the best light, the best composition and still tell the story in one simple image. A feature film is exactly the same but in a feature film there needs to 172,800 single frames all with perfect lighting and perfect composition.
Always in search of "new light" Mazell worked in just about every aspect of still photography. After working the photojournalist job Mazell continues into ski photography in the mountains of Oregon, technical photography in the defense industry, product photography, aerial photography, professional and collegiate sports, motorcycle photography, pin up models with hot rods, fashion photography, advertising photography, industrial photography and environmental portrait photography. The most memorable of the the photography work was with Sikorsky Helicopters. This job required a two week ride along with the Los Angeles Country Fire Department in the back seat of a Black Hawk Helicopter.
After twenty years of still photography Mazell moved into the director of photography positions on commercials and feature films. His latest feature film "The Visitor from the Planet Omicron" will be released in 2012. Other films include "Callback" and "Septenary Kill."
In 2011 Mazell also created commercials for True Star Health of Canada, Hollywood Park, Audi, CODA Electric Cars, Neave Outdoor Solutions of New York, a flooring company, a major manufacturing company, a political documentary, 150 online informational spots for Harbor Freight Tools, several music videos and a reality TV series.
Mazell just applies his extensive lighting knowledge to any job for perfect results on every job. Next up is a trip to Oakland for a complete series of videos for a new technology company.
Mazell plans on shooting several feature films in 2012. Mazell explains his ultimate assignment, "There's are tops and bottoms in every industry. I started as a news photographer and would definitely like to reach the top of the image creating business with a $100 Million Dollar feature film shot on three continents. If you are going to think big, might as well go as big as possible." For now Mazell will be content to work in the one to five million dollar feature film range.
Mazell and Great Art Productions are available for all film and video projects, at least until the $100 million dollar film comes his way.
